What Is the PsyTech Genesys Assessment?
The PsyTech Genesys Assessment, also sometimes referred to as PsyTech GRT1/GRT2 Test is a cognitive ability test that assesses numerical, verbal, and abstract reasoning.
The test has two versions:
- Graduate Reasoning Test (GRT1) – The more challenging version, used for management and graduate professions.
- General Reasoning Test (GRT2) – The standard version, used for non-graduate positions.
Both test versions have the same number of questions, time limit, and topics. The difference lies in the difficulty of the questions.
Test Structure and Question Format
The PsyTech Genesys Assessment comprises 3 sections:
- Numerical – 25 questions in 10 minutes.
- Abstract – 25 questions in 10 minutes.
- Verbal – 35 questions in 8 minutes.
Let’s go over each section and cover the various types of questions it includes:
Numerical Reasoning
The numerical section of the PsyTech Genesys Online Assessment mainly focuses on the abilities of quick calculation and pattern recognition.
It contains 25 questions of 3 types:
- Odd One Out
- Number Analogies
- Number Series
Odd One Out
This question type will present you with a set of numbers. All numbers except one have certain mathematical properties. Your task is to find the odd one out.
In the Free Practice section, you may find a partial list of common number properties for this question type.

Which of the following is the odd one out?
- 5
- 45

- 23
- 41

Answer and Explanation
The correct answer is 2 – 45.
All other numbers are prime, while 45 is not.
Pro Tip
Numerical “Odd One Out” questions are rather uncommon and can be found nearly nowhere outside the PsyTech Genesys Assessment.
Therefore, it’s crucial to become familiar with this question type before taking the test.
Number Analogies
In the number analogies question type (also a rather unique question format), you will be presented with two numbers that have a relationship between them. Your task is to find the number that shares the same relationship with a third number.

The correct answer is 3 – 1.05.
0.72 = 2.16 / 3

Number Series
This common question type is used in various cognitive ability tests. It contains a sequence of numbers that follow a specific rule. Your task is to find the rule and to choose the number that correctly continues the sequence.

What is the next number in the sequence below?
6, 13, 27, 55, ?
- 82
- 110
- 152
- 111
- 145

Answer and Explanation
The correct answer is 4 – 111.
Looking at the sequence of differences:
- 13 – 6 = 7
- 27 – 13 = 14
- 55 – 27 = 28
The difference between every two terms (numbers) starts as 7 and is then multiplied by 2 in each step. Therefore, the difference to the next term should be 28 x 2 = 56.
55 + 56 = 111.
Abstract Reasoning
The abstract reasoning section of the PsyTech GRT test assesses how well you recognize patterns and rules depicted in abstract shapes and apply them to solve problems.
It contains 25 questions of 3 types:
- Next in Series
- Odd One Out
- Shape Analogies
Pro Tip
The abstract reasoning section has the largest impact on your overall PsyTech test score, and therefore you should focus most of your efforts there. Read more in the Scoring section.
Next in Series
In this question type, you are presented with a sequence of shapes. These shapes follow a certain pattern leading from one to the next. Your task is to choose the shape that correctly continues the pattern.

The correct answer is 1.
The two circles move independently, according to the following pattern:
- The black circle moves one step clockwise on every step.
- The grey circle moves one step counterclockwise on every step.
Note that on step 4, both circles are in the same location, so the black circle covers the grey circle (it could have been the other way around, as well).

Odd One Out
In this question type, you will be presented with a set of abstract shapes. All shapes but one follow a certain rule. Your task is to find the shape which does not follow the rule.

The correct answer is 4.
While the shapes in answer option 4 include two different colors, all other options include three.
Shape Analogies
You are given a pair of shapes that have a certain relationship. Your task is to choose the shape that forms the same relationship with a third shape.

The analogous shape is rotated 90 degrees counterclockwise relative to the original. Alternatively, a mirror image across the vertical axis yields the same result.
Note that answer 1 is incorrect as it is a mirror image across the horizontal axis.
Verbal Reasoning
The verbal reasoning section of the PsyTech Genesys Assessment assesses your ability to recognize common features shared by words, as well as relationships between them.
It contains 35 questions of 4 types:
- Word Series
- Odd One Out
- Synonyms
- Word Analogies
Word Series
This type of question contains a sequence of words. Words in particular places along the series form a relationship. Your task is to find the pattern of these relationships, and correctly complete the sequence.

Answer and Explanation
The correct answer is 5 – Weak.
In this series, the opposite of each word appears 3 places later:
Clean, False, Strong, Black, Dirty, True…
Therefore, the next word should be the opposite of Strong.
Pro Tip
Both the “Word Series” and Odd One Out” question types (see next) are uncommon in the world of cognitive tests. Being unfamiliar with these question types is a recipe for confusion and error on the actual PsyTech test.
Odd One Out
This question type contains a set of words, all of which but one share something in common. Your task is to find the word that does not share that feature.

Answer and Explanation
The correct answer is 3 – Maw.
All other words describe the parts of an airplane, while Maw is the mouth and throat of an animal (usually a predator).
Synonyms
This question type is much simpler than the previous two, and simply requires you to find a word that means the same as a given word.

The correct answer is 6 – Relate.
“Pertain” means having a relation or reference to something, e.g., “the facts pertaining to the case.”
Word Analogies
In this question type, you are given a pair of words that have a certain relationship. You need to choose the word that follows the same relationship with a third word.

In this instance, looking at the sequence of differences will not yield any valuable insights. However, we can note that each term equals the sum of the two previous terms, plus 1:
- 10 = 7 + 2 + 1
- 13 = 2 + 10 + 1
- 24 = 10 + 13 + 1
Therefore, the next term equals:
13 + 24 + 1 = 38.
Abstract Reasoning
Question 4

The correct answer is 6.
Shape 6 has seven blackened squares, while all other shapes have 6.

The correct answer is 3.
The shapes in the sequence gain one side on every step – triangle (3 sides), rectangle (4 sides), pentagon (5 sides). Therefore, the next shape in the sequence should have 6 sides.

Most patterns in Next in Series type questions can be narrowed down to one or more of the 4 basic patterns: Rotation, Progression, Motion, and Construction.

Rotation
In the rotation pattern, objects across the rows or columns rotate in a certain pattern. This pattern may be constant (e.g. 90 degrees) or changing (e.g. 45, 90, 135 degrees, etc.).
Progression
The progression pattern is a rather broad definition for a change in object that is not self-evident. This pattern requires most experience and practice to recognize, since it is so versatile.
Examples may be:
- Number of shapes’ sides
- Number of visible elements
- Coloring

Construction
The construction pattern, which in the language of the Raven APM test is named “combination” is a construction of two objects in the row or column under certain rules to create the third.
Motion
In the motion pattern, objects change position based on certain rules.

Scoring
How Is the PsyTech Genesys Assessment Scored?
Based on the online score reporting options (source), your PsyTech GRT test score is calculated as follows:
Step #1 – Raw Score
Your raw score for each section (numerical, verbal, abstract) is calculated based on the number of correct answers. No points are reduced for wrong answers.
Step #2 – Conversion to STANINE
Then, the raw score is converted to a STANINE (Standard Nine) score – a scale of 1-9, for each section separately.

Unlike most cognitive ability tests, which put emphasis on percentile scores, the PsyTech Assessment relies mostly on STANINE scores when screening candidates.

Step #3 – Total Score Calculation
After your STANINE scores have been determined, your overall score will be calculated as follows:
- Your abstract reasoning STANINE score will determine 50% of the overall score.
- Your verbal reasoning STANINE score will determine 30% of the overall score.
- Your numerical reasoning STANINE score will determine 20% of the overall score.
So, for instance, if your abstract STANINE score is 7, your verbal STANINE is 9, and your numerical STANINE is 6, your overall score will be 7.4:
[0.5 x 7] + [0.3 x 9] + [0.2 x 6] = 7.4
What Is a Good Score on the PsyTech GRT Test?
There is no clear-cut score that can be considered a “good” score. However, an overall test STANINE score of 7.3 and above will put you in the top 20% of test-takers, which is generally where you want to be.
An overall STANINE score of 8 and above will put you in the top 10%, which almost guarantees that you successfully pass this stage.
What Is the Average Score on the PsyTech Test?
The STANINE score scale is defined on a scale of 1-9, with 5 as the mean, so 5 is the average score in the PsyTech test. Remember that this includes a rather wide range of results, depending on your scores in the 3 test sections.
Tips
Considering all the unique features of the PsyTech Genesys Assessment, here are 3 tips for acing it:
Tip #1 – Focus Mainly on the Abstract Section
As explained in the Scoring section, the abstract reasoning test will determine 50% of your overall score, compared with 30% and 20% for the verbal and numerical sections, respectively.
That aligns with the emphasis PsyTech puts on the ability to recognize patterns and relationships within information never before seen.

However, you must also consider your own personal abilities, as the next tip suggests.
Tip #2 – See Where You, Personally, Stand
While the abstract section will have the greatest impact on your score, it may be the case that you are more naturally inclined towards this kind of questions.
If that is the case, then you should focus your preparation efforts accordingly.
See what types of questions you, personally, find easier or more challenging, and direct your practice plan to address the topics where you can benefit the most.
Tip #3 – Do Your Best to Solve ALL Questions
Unlike other cognitive ability tests that allow around 15 seconds per question, and very few candidates ever get to solve all questions, the PsyTech Genesys GRT Assessment allows 24 seconds per question in the numerical and abstract sections (around 14 seconds in the verbal section, where questions are usually simpler).
As such, while other tests explicitly state that candidates are not expected to solve all questions, the PsyTech test is definitely designed to allow candidates to at least attempt all 25 or 35 questions in each section.
As we have presented in the score conversion table in the Scoring section, solving all 25 questions correctly in the numerical section will yield the maximum score of 9, whereas a mere 4 questions less (21) will yield a score of 6 – a major difference.
In addition, no points are reduced for wrong answers, so it is better to guess any answers rather than leaving a question blank.
To sum it up – do your best at improving your solving speed and manage your time so you attempt all questions in each section.
