What Is the Atkins Online Immersive Assessment?
The Atkins Immersive Assessment is a blended assessment (i.e., combines behavioral and cognitive questions) used to screen graduates and apprentices for AtkinsRéalis. The test is designed and administered by test provider Amberjack (weareamberjack).
After following the Test Invitation and logging into your profile on Atkins’s candidate site, this is how it will look like:
Test Structure and Question Format
The Atkins Immersive Assessment leans heavily on the standard format of the Amberjack Assessment:
- 12 situational judgment questions
- 10 cognitive questions (numerical + verbal)
- 3 interview questions (written/video)
However, there are two modifications to the original assessment you should be aware of:
- Situational judgment questions are extra-challenging.
- Test content is often in the context of energy, infrastructure, and engineering.
Below we cover each question type.

Situational Judgment Questions
These questions have the biggest impact on your score, as they compose the largest portion of the Atkins Immersive Assessment (12 out of 25 questions).
Each question includes a brief job-related scenario followed by 4 responses. Your task is to determine the “Most” and “Least” recommended responses.

Pro Tip
The situational judgment questions in the Atkins Immersive Assessment usually assess 2 pillars simultaneously. That makes them more challenging than standard SJT questions.
Cognitive Questions (Numerical and Verbal)
The cognitive questions in the Atkins Immersive Assessment are designed as emails, and are clustered together in groups of 3-4 questions:
These questions will include one or more data sources – graphs and tables for the numerical questions and a brief text for the verbal questions. At the end of the email, your colleague will ask you a question based on the information enclosed in the email, and you will be required to choose the correct response out of 3 or 4 answer options.

Video Interview
The last part of the Atkins Immersive Assessment consists of several video questions.
- You will be allowed to prepare your response for as long as you want.
- You will have 2 minutes to record your response.
- You will have only one shot to record your response. Once you start recording, you will not be able to pause or restart.
Pro Tip
While the video questions generally function as a standard interview, they will not be reviewed by an Atkins employee. Rather, an Amberjack assessor will review them, compared with the 4 pillars measured by the Amberjack assessment.
What Does the Atkins Online Immersive Assessment Measure?
As all Amberjack assessments, the Atkins Immersive Assessment is designed to measure pure potential for job success. To do so, the assessment defines 4 pillars that are aimed at eliminating any bias that is related to culture or past experience:
- Grit
- Creative Force
- Digital Mindset
- Applied Intellect
This will also be specifically mentioned in the introductory video that opens your assessment.
For an in-depth overview of the 4 pillars and the 11 categories comprising them, see the Amberjack Guide.

Question 1
Recommended Answer
Most: D
Least: A
This question measures two pillars: Grit and Applied Intellect. The core of the question is twofold:
- How motivated and committed are you to achieve your goals in the face of setbacks (Grit).
- How you socially and emotionally operate within a team (Applied Intellect).
A table will help exemplify this:
Response |
Grit |
Social and Emotional Intelligence |
A (Least) |
Low |
Low |
B |
High |
Low |
C |
Low |
High |
D (Most) |
High |
High |
Let’s review each response:
Answer A – It’s best not to get involved with informal conversations you are not part of. Do what you can to complete your design on time.
This is the least recommended response as it is low on both social intelligence and grit. “Doing what you can” demonstrates a somewhat passive approach that is set on maintaining roughly the same effort and methods of work that have been taken thus far. Additionally, by ignoring your teammates’ situation, you are taking a passive approach in that sense as well.
Answer B – Stay overtime to make sure your design is done on time, so you are not held accountable for the entire project’s delay.
This response demonstrates high levels of grit. However, by being selfish and taking care of yourself alone, it shows low social and emotional intelligence.
Answer C – Volunteer to approach your team leader on behalf of the whole team and ask for a schedule extension.
This response is opposite to response C. It demonstrates care for your team and high social and emotional intelligence, but completely lacks grit. By requesting to extend the time to meet your deadline you are not tackling the problem, rather attempting to avert it.
Answer D – Set up a team meeting the following day to share ideas on how everyone can improve their work and finish the design on schedule.
This is the most recommended response. It demonstrates both grit – motivation to take the initiative and overcome a challenge, AND social intelligence, by keeping everyone involved and helping the team rather than yourself.
Question 2
Recommended Answer
Most: C
Least: D
This question measures two pillars: Creative Force and Applied Intellect:
- How original and innovative is the strategy you are willing to suggest (Creative Force).
- How open and committed to learning you are (Applied Intellect).
Arranging the responses in a table:
Response |
Creative Force (Innovative) |
Applied Intellect (Learning) |
A |
Low |
High |
B |
High |
Low |
C (Most) |
High |
High |
D (Least) |
Low |
Low |
Let’s review each response:
Answer A – Set yourself several days of quiet work to thoroughly research the requirements of the project and the most proven solution for each.
This response demonstrates a high level of commitment to learning and research, but is focused on solitary work without external feedback or implementation of new ideas, and is therefore low on innovation and Creative Force.
Answer B – Arrange a pre-meeting with several experienced stakeholders to hear their opinions. Keep an open mind and use their feedback to kickoff the project.
This response is the opposite of response A in terms of the demonstrated traits. While it demonstrates an open mindset and willingness to accept new ideas and approaches, it lacks your added work. By merely collecting ideas from others, this response shows little commitment to doing the hard work and adding your own value.
Answer C – Briefly meet several key stakeholders to gain insight on the unique features of the project. Then, look for an original approach to integrate them all together.
This is the most recommended response. It demonstrates both openness to new methods and solutions, AND the self-work required to integrate them into a single, innovative, well-though strategy.
Answer D – Go through past borehole analysis projects. Find the one which most closely resembles the current project and use its strategy as a starting point.
This is the least recommended response. By relying predominantly on past work, it demonstrates both low innovation AND motivation to learn.
Question 3
Answer and Explanation
The correct answer is 2.
To find the renewable energy revenue as a percentage of the total revenue, we will:
- Sum up the monthly revenue of each energy market.
- Sum up the total revenue of all three markets.
- Find the percentage of renewable energy of this total.
Results are shown in the table below (data is in $K):

The revenue generated by renewable energy ($850K) accounts for approximately 22.8% of the total revenue (1,710 + 850 + 1,160) = 3,720. This means that the goal of 20% has been met.
Question 4
Answer and Explanation
The correct answer is 1.
While this question contains a lot of information, most of it is irrelevant. What interests us is the overall cost of each course.
That can be calculated as follows:
Overall Cost = 125 x [Cost per Employee] x [1 – Discount] + [Registration Fee]
Results are shown in the table below:
Program |
Cost for Employees |
Registration Fee |
Total |
Data Analysis |
125 x $170 = $17,000 |
$5,000 |
$22,000 |
Structural Design |
125 x $200 = $21,250 |
$2,500 |
$23,750 |
3D Modeling |
125x $185 = $23,125 |
$2,500 |
$25,625 |
So, the data analysis course is the cheapest option at $22,000.
Question 5
Answer and Explanation
The correct answer is 1.
According to the text:
“Over the past two decades…senior management increasingly view…emotional intelligence as crucial for effective leadership and have made these skills a key requirement in their search for candidates.”
The word “increasingly” indicates that senior management view emotional intelligence as more crucial for effective leadership than twenty years ago.
Question 6
Answer and Explanation
The correct answer is 3.
According to the text: “…transformations also require the commitment and involvement of the entire organization to prevail – managers and employees alike.
Hence, a digital transformation imposed by senior management will likely be unsuccessful, according to the text. Similarly, a transformation which leaves senior management behind (as in answer 4) is also likely to fail.
